I received an ARC of The Reluctant Assassin, a witty and engaging crime thriller that follows Tony, a man whose life is shattered after the treachery of Meredith Grant leads to the loss of his wife and children. Grief has transformed Tony into a loner, leaving him distrustful of others and disconnected from the art of conversation. He approaches every interaction with suspicion, aware that words can be repeated, misinterpreted, or even recorded. Living under numerous aliases, Tony carefully guards his identity in order to carry out his assignments.

The author does an excellent job of crafting an intriguing storyline, with strong attention to detail in both the settings and unfolding events. The novel features a large cast of characters, each playing a meaningful role in the plot. One aspect I felt could have been strengthened was the early development of Snap, a detective whose perspective alternates with Tony’s throughout the story. A more gradual introduction to his character would have made the transitions between scenes smoother. Nevertheless, Snap ultimately becomes a key figure, and the various storylines come together effectively.

The book is filled with mystery, danger, and a web of suspects and victims, creating an atmosphere of constant suspense. Tony’s grief leaves him feeling as though he has nothing left to lose, which makes his transformation into an assassin both compelling and unexpectedly humorous. The irony of an assassin who dislikes blood and cannot use a gun adds a unique and entertaining twist to the story.

The Reluctant Assassin is an absorbing assassination thriller that keeps the pages turning with its blend of crime, detective work, suspense, and humor. I would highly recommend this novel to readers who enjoy crime fiction, murder mysteries, and detective stories with a clever and lighthearted edge.
