5/5 ⭐️ | The Railroad Man by Dan E. Hendrickson
It's 1883 and Arthur Edwards, a Civil War Navy veteran is on a mission to extend the rail line from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Billings, Montana but construction is halted at the edge of Crow territory. Arthur tries to negotiate a right-of-way agreement and the situation escalates when the ranchers led by John Harris and racist Bob Jones resort to kidnapping Aylen, the granddaughter of Chief Pretty Eagle.
This book is a fun, action-packed romp through the days of railroad expansion. Arthur's struggle between his war time past and his desire to reinvent himself is a testament to the time period. I loved Aylen as the educated woman but also a stabilizing force for Arthur, helping him recover from psychological trauma. Hendrickson's own experiences working on ranches and with horses shines through and brings authenticity to the historical details.
