Behind Church Doors is the story of NikkiMac and the journey of her life, from childhood into adulthood. She has become a Christian and shares the story of her life in sin before eventually becoming a member of the church. Some of the experiences and iniquities from her past are sensitive and intense, and she struggles from time to time with staying on track and living according to what the Christian church teaches she should be.
The character development in this book is excellent, and each person is introduced with a clear sense of who they are. The lives of the characters unfold in Trenton, New Jersey, and I feel that someone from the area may have a deeper understanding of the lifestyle and interactions NikkiMac has with the people around her. Many of the situations are connected to urban living and the environment in which the church is located, which adds another layer to the story.
Overall, this is a very good book, filled with church drama and a glimpse into the lives of the people behind the church doors. I especially love NikkiMac’s character because she made me chuckle in certain scenes throughout the book. I also love her friendship with her bestie, Jacee.
I recommend this book to Christian readers who share the beliefs and values taught within the faith. Behind Church Doors touches on what it means to be human while trying to live according to your faith, and it may resonate with anyone who has struggled to stay true to their beliefs while navigating real life.
