5/5 ⭐ | The Adventures of Jimmy Crikey: The Emerald Lake by Wallace E. Briggs

Beginning with the striking cover design readers are immediately drawn in by the bright greens, yellows, and reds. The front jacket illustration of the redhead with the elf ears provides readers with visual imagery that is only enhanced as the pages unfold.

As the reader dives in, we soon learn about Jimmy McGellan, an alien from Attalia with unusual abilities. Relating back to the visual images imprinted on readers as early as the cover design, our mental picture of Jimmy is further evolved, with a continued play on red, as we are introduced to Jimmy’s unique red boots, boots that stay with him for his lifetime and aid in his other worldly abilities. “The Adventures of Jimmy Crikey: The Emerald Lake” quickly kicks off with a well-worn cast of characters. There is obviously some history there as this is the fourth book in the series, but author Wallace Briggs provides enough background and introduction to each that this book easily reads as a standalone.

“The Adventures of Jimmy Crikey: The Emerald Lake” quickly draws readers in, from mermaids to mermen, witches, and Lord Oron, the comradery and teamwork to save the Aquamites are inspiring and provide for a well-varied work of fantasy and science fiction. With subtle hints of finding love, and the bonds of family and friends, this well-rounded story holds a plot line that keeps it moving quickly.

With beautiful scenery and descriptions such as the ripples left behind in the wake of the Aquamites’ trails to the devilish fire breathing serpents, this book is easily brought to life in the reader’s mind as we brace ourselves for the task ahead in Jimmy’s latest adventure.
